Find Your Flock

Loneliness isn’t just a feeling that aging adults experience – it’s a serious health concern.

For more information about the program, please contact Jane Taylor at jane@kinniriver.org.

The Kinnickinnic River Land Trust research team (Steve Leonard, Emmaline Weist, Jane Taylor, Em Loerzel, and Shawyn Lee) has been exploring a unique solution: nature. The project Find Your Flock aims to determine the effects of nature-based programming on feelings of loneliness and social isolation in adults aged 55 and older in Pierce and St. Croix County. Programs such as birding, nature walks, biking, animal interactions, and story telling can help aid aging adults to feel more connected with themselves, with nature, and with their community.

What makes Find Your Flock special is how determined we are to connect the community. Local residents, organizations, and aging facilities are working hand-in-hand to design and guide programs, ensuring they reflect the needs and values of the seniors who live there. Activities aren’t solely constructed to be effective—they’re also meaningful and accessible. By interweaving nature, social connection, and community voices, the project strives to create long-lasting and sustainable programming that not only reduce loneliness, but help the entire community feel healthier and more supported.
