Legacy Gift

Protecting the coldwater streams, scenic bluffs, prairies, and natural beauty of the

Kinnickinnic River watershed forever.

When you include the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust (KRLT) in your estate or financial planning, you ensure that future generations will experience the same clear waters, thriving wildlife habitats, and protected landscapes we cherish today. Planned gifts come in all sizes, and leave a permanent mark on the lands and waters that make the Kinnickinnic River watershed flourish.

Bequest

Bequest

A bequest is one the the simplest and most flexible ways to make a lasting impact on local conservation. By including a gift to KRLT in your will or living trust, you maintain complete control over your assets during your lifetime while building a permanent conservation legacy for the future.

HOW IT WORKS

You can designate a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your total estate, or the residual balance of your estate after loved ones are provided for. Bequests can easily be added to an existing will through a simple amendment or included when drafting a new plan with your legal advisor.

SAMPLE BEQUEST LANGUAGE

To make including KRLT in your estate plans as easy as possible, you can share the following sample language with your legal advisor:

"I give, devise, and bequeath to the Kinnickinnic Land Trust, a non-profit organization located in River Falls, Wisconsin (EIN 39-6593121), [insert dollar amount, percentage of estate, or description of property] to be used for its general charitable purposes in protecting the land and waters of the Kinnickinnic River watershed."

Gifts from Your IRA
(Qualified Charitable Distributions)

If you are 70 1/2 or older and hold a traditional IRA, you can make a tax-smart gift directly from your retirement savings to support conservation in the Kinni watershed. A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows you to transfer funds tax-free directly to KRLT, helping you meet your charitable goals while reducing your taxable income.

Why Consider a QCD?

Tax Efficiency: Transferred funds count toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) if you are 73 or older, without adding to your adjusted gross income.

Immediate Impact: Unlike a bequest, a QCD puts your generosity to work protecting land and water right away.

Simple Execution: You can initiate a QCD by contacting your IRA custodian and requesting a direct rollover check payable to Kinnickinnic River Land Trust.

Please contact us or including details about your QCD so that we can properly acknowledge your gift.

Partnering with the St. Croix Valley Foundation to ensure permanent support for KRLT

Building Long-Term Sustainability

In addition to direct gifts and bequests, the Kinnickinnic River Land Trust maintains an endowment fun held and managed through the St Croix Valley Foundation (SCVF).

An endowment is a permanent, principal-protected fund. The core principal remains invested for long-term growth, while an annual distribution supports KRLT's annual generation operational expenses. Giving to the endowment ensures KRLT has the dependable resources needed to safeguard the Kinnickinnic River watershed forever, no matter what financial challenges the future brings.

How to Support the Endowment

Gifts of any size can be added directly to the KRLT Endowment Fund at any time.

Direct Outright Gifts: You can make a tax-deductible gift of cash, appreciated stock, or real estate designated specifically for the KRLT Endowment Fund through the St. Croix Valley Foundation.

Estate Gifts and Bequests: You can designate all or a portion of your bequest or planned gift to be directed straight into our endowment fund.

IRA Distributions (QCDs): Qualified Charitable Distribution can also be directed to support our endowment growth.

Why St. Croix Valley Foundation?

Partnering with SCVF provides KRLT with institutional investment expertise and regional stewardship-ensuring ever dollar contributed to our endowment works as hard as possible for local conservation.

Gifts to the endowment fund should be addressed to KRLT and are first processed through the organization and then deposited into our endowment fund.
